The Yusupov mate
Watching a bullet game by some strong GM’s tonight I thought I spotted a nice mate. I wasn’t entirely correct but not far off. I’ve changed the position in the game by moving a rook to e8. This significantly changes matters. Have a look:
In the diagrammed position white can mate with 1.Qh7+ Kf8 2.Qh8+!! Nxh8 3.Nh7#
A truly beautiful mating sequence right!?
This I had all seen before and the following position was in fact a question in the recent Reykjavik Pub Quiz in which I made a number of questions.
So this is from Yusupov’s masterpiece against Ivanchuk many many years ago in the 90’s. If black had the move here he would play the same idea: 1…Qh1+! 2.Bxh1 Nh2+ and then 3…Rg1#
The pattern with the Queen sacrifice and then the knight giving check opening up for the rook is exactly the same although the beginning details of one and the final of the other are different.
