Triple vs Double
Yesterday on the first day of the FIDE World Rapid Championship I saw an interesting occurence in one of the games. With the black pieces Alexander Fier the talented Brazilian attacker saddled his opponent, Ivan Cheparinov with tripled pawns. What I found more interesting was that Fier also had doubled pawns on the same file and they even intersected! This is a rare occurence but one should be able to find similar examples and I managed to find plenty. This one for instance was from Grabarczyk – Tella 2000:
These pawns seem to be most common on the bishop files c- and f- and hard to imagine many instance of 3 vs 2 on other files though of course not impossible!
I also looked in the database and found only one occurence ever with three tripled pawns on the same file. This was from a Slovakian U-12 Girls game between Sevcikova and Blichova in 1999. Quite extraordinary!
Later in the same Fier game this pawn structure I also found quite funny:
The black doubled pawns and the rook (in red) somehow reminded me of these:
Have you had interesting pawn structures like these ones happen in your games?
